London, 15 Jan 2005 — Broadband in Turkey is a reality.

New research from Quantum Web suggests that Turkey achieves a great growth in broadband sector.

The number of broadband subscribers rose to over half a million by the end of 2004 (462,000 xDSL, 40,500 Cable Broadband) from less than 16,000 subscribers at the end of 2003. The subscription adoption rate is between 8,000- 10,000 per day and according to Quantum-Web estimates the number of residential broadband subscribers should rise to nearly 5.4 million at the end of 2008.

Turkey had an estimated population of 71m in 2004, making it potentially the second-largest market in Europe (behind Germany).

Demand for broadband services (in volume terms) is expected to be driven by the growth of the population, economic growth especially with joining the EU and increasing use of the internet.

With just over 21m lines for a population of 71m, fixed-line telephone penetration is lower than in most west European countries, but quite high by developing country standards. With population growth expected to rise at the same rate of the number of mainline phone lines, fixed-line phone penetration is set to increase marginally over the forecast period to about 33 percent.
In terms of revenue as some individual and medium and large-scale organisations opt for VoIP, the revenue stream would shift from voice to data.

In the broadband segment, the incumbent, TT (Turk Telekom) is the only xDSL and Cable broadband service provider in the country. Other main ISPs such as super online, PRnet, and ADANet will offer xDSL services in near future.
