Subscribers:
In the first quarter of 2006, the number of Menara’s
(Maroc Telecom) broadband subscribers increased
to 296,000 amounting to a quarterly growth rate
of 2.2% which is making the country the most broadband-intensive
African nation. The country incumbent with over
83% market share has a monopolistic position in
the market but other ISPs such as Wanadoo are
gaining ground by an aggressive marketing policy,
reducing non recurring cost and most importantly
monthly tariff reduction. The growth of the incumbent
in terms of subscribers is coupled with a positive
trend in terms of revenue gain. The positive momentum
will generate revenues where the Internet revenue
and data have shown an increase during the same
period.
At the end of March 2006,
the total number of DSL connections amounted to
296,000 (+225% year-on-year), whereas the Internet
lines number rose to 306,000 (+132% year-on-year).
In the meanwhile the number of fixed lines in
service increased to 1.336 million (+.1.98% year-on-year).

Revenues
of Fixedline and Internet according to the company
figures accumulated to March 2006 stood at 276.66
million Euros, a year-on-year increase of 7.83%
mainly as a result of the DSL revenue growth.
Price elasticity: According to
the result of our price elasticity analysis of
Maroc Telecom DSL tariffs for Q1 2005 and Q1 2006,
the demand for DSL broadband is highly elastic
to the change of tariffs, as the arc elasticity
ratio is 1.74. In other words, for every drop
in the cost of bandwidth by one Euro there was
a net gain of 3,890 new subscribers since Q1 2005.

Broadband packages
start from 11.11 Euro for a flat rate of 128
Kbps for the residential market to 59.6 Euro
for a flat rate of 4096Kbps. There is a recurring
cost for hardware of 14 Euro for residential
subscribers.
