Abstract
The total number
of broadband lines with an annual increase of 27%
from 246.4 million at 30 June 2006 now stands at a
throbbing 311.7 million in June 2007.
According to
our findings, the growth was driven mainly by the
24.9%, 31.2% and 25.7% increase in the number of broadband
lines in Asia-Pacific, Americas and Europe, to reach
120.9, 87.2 and 100 million respectively by 30 June
2007.
The fastest growing region on an annualized basis
was “Middle East- Africa” with a vivid
growth of 33.3% where the number of broadband lines
rose to 3.6 million during the same period.
The findings
also point to the fact that DSL with trend growth
of 25% passing 201 million lines by 30 June 2007 is
acting as the engine of broadband growth. Cable Modem
meanwhile has shown a steady growth rate of 18% with
over 65 million lines by the same period.
Among other
technologies LAN with 39% annual growth shows the
largest access technology whereas FTTx with 57% increase
in the number of broadband lines to 14.7 million is
the second largest access technology. FWA and W-LAN
with 47% and 93% are less employed.
Graph 2 shows
DSL, Cable Modem and other technologies market share
through the second quarter of 2007.
The report
includes data for over 350 operators in 95 countries.
